The Presentation of the Lord occurs forty days after Jesus’ birth, when Mary and Joseph present him in the temple. The Presentation is a proclamation of Christ—Messiah and Priest, Lord and Savior. He is the light who came into this world to dispel sin and darkness. A tradition since the seventh century, candles to be used throughout the year are blessed at Mass on this day, hence coining the term “Candlemas”. Candles will be blessed at all daily Masses on February 2. Parishioners are encouraged to bring their candles to that Mass for blessing.
